Surgery is performed with three principle aims:
The patient is started on glucocorticoid steroid therapy (e.g. dexamethasone) when presenting with clinical features of raised intracranial pressures with the aim of decreasing the cerebral oedema prior to surgery.
Radiation Therapy
Postoperative radiation therapy is generally an effective adjunct to surgery in the treatment of higher grade gliomas. It has been shown to double the median survival for high grade gliomas to 37 weeks.
