Aetiology
Epidemiology studies have not indicated any particular factor (viral, chemical or traumatic) that would cause brain tumours in humans, although a range of cerebral tumours can be induced in animals experimentally.
There is no genetic predisposition but chromosome 22 abnormalities have been noted in meningiomas. Von Recklinghausen’s diseases in inherited as an autosomal dominant pattern and these patients have increased risk of gliomas, meningioma and spinal and cerebral schwannomas, as well as peripheral nerve schwannomas, plexiform neurofibroma and cutaneous neurofibromas.
